business card

written by Matylda in design

I’ve still got some material from the Amsterdam and Cologne Events I want to show you.

The average buisness card is credit card sized and from white paperboard with black font ( best fonts are Helvetica, Rotis or Arial ).

This is Stephan Siepermann’s idea of a buisness card:

zaha_hadid_dezeen.jpg

Couple days ago, while surfing the www, I found an article over the Lilium Tower project in Warsaw on dezeen design magazine. Zaha Hadids architecture is like the most specific design a ‘love it-or hate’ it thing. And I am not the biggest fan of Zaha. But I want you to show what made me laugh…

another blog - live!

written by Matylda in design

That’s the common blog we know: (Wikipedia abstract)

A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs.

That’s Stephanie Rudolph’s idea of it:

hookers en vogue

written by Matylda in design

Amsterdam. Netherlands. The Fashion Week is going on. On the ouderzijds achterburgwal (street name) in the city centre you can buy the latest couture party dress in the red light district of Amsterdam. Some of the former prostitution establishments are temporarily available for sixteen fashion designers. It’s a cultural clash of fashion and prostitution, they say.
In one shop front window a ‘women’ (rather a girl) in garish lingerie is advertising her body to passers-by and in the next front window you find one of the hippest designers the dutch fashion avantgarde has thesedays - a brave performance somehow, I must admit.
But possibly it was me who was the bravest on that day. 5 to 10 prostitutes yelled at me and some more showed me their middlefingers (no photos of that) . I guess they don’t like it when people take pictures of them… just for you guys, just for you.

design contest in Cologne … my 3 best talents

written by Matylda in design

That will get a little bit messy. I’ve still got some cool stories to tell from both Cologne and Amsterdam. Here’s one from the IMM Cologne. The [d³] contest attracts 450 product submissions every year. Entrants must be students or recent graduates who completed their studies no longer than three years ago. This year there were 35 prototypes on display. Here are three of them.

raphael van allmen
raphaelvanallmen.jpg

raphaelvonallmen_chair.jpg

This year, first place went to raphael von allmen from switzerland for his chair with flexible backrest. Raphael studied at ECAL University of art and design Lausanne. I like his chair and the fact that he speaks polish (learned it because of his girlfriend).

jordi canudas
jordicanudas.jpg

Jordi Canudas is born in Barcelona but works and lives in London. His sofa is a piece of interactive Architecture. A wall and a place to sit or to lounge. Movement, sound and touch hint at what might be happening on the other side.

The two Germans developed a wax lamp which melts when it is used… good design and marketing.

written by Matylda in designers & me

they call him Nacho. he must have heard the joke about his name not just once. he heard it from me another time. when he introduced himself I got hungry. how could that be?!…
If he wouldn’t work on his pumped up chairs he would travel and see the world. luckily he is on a roll with his work. And his success makes him doing what he does, he says.

superstore04 - biosfeer

written by Matylda in design

The Superstore04 was, in my opinion, the highlight of the modefabriek event this past sunday and monday. The Superstore04 wants to be a manifesto for the inspiring power of nature in design. So, how does that look like these days ? Let me show you some of the fashion, products and nature coalesced on one event.

the factory for fashion

written by Matylda in design

Amsterdam. Netherlands. Yesterday was the last day of the Modefabriek, which calls itself the only real fashion trade fair in The Netherlands. You can find here everything what will be in sale for summer season 2008. Especially the commercial stuff. A lot to see - more to forget. Here’s my selection of things and people you should have seen.

written by Matylda in design

Amsterdam. Netherlands. Progressive fashion, 7 fashion shows and 1 party - that’s off schedule.
A fashionable event - I couldn’t belive that at 8 pm 300 people were waiting in front of the door to get in. In the beginn, not been impressed of the first 4 shows, I was finally suprised of the last 3 ones. Compliments to belle suavage, gyasuda and especially to nikoline liv andersen. My highlight of the evening: Carlo Wijnands who touched my shoulder - yeah!

markus gogolin: mr.designspotter

written by Matylda in designers & me

Mr, Designspotter, Markus Gogolin, studied architecture. He liked it. But he did not like it so much to make a profession out of it. He had the idea to create a platform for designers who want to show their work to the public. If he and his team like what they get sent they will feature your product for free.
so, go for it!

written by Matylda in design

Valentin is student of product design, connoisseur of the art of living and is host of the ‘weplayyoudance’ partys in maastricht which he does with his older brother jonas.san. But his real passion is interior design. Constantly he is remodeling his direct ambiance.
This is his ‘new’ kitchen:

I like the ‘zaha hadid organic touch’ in the mix of the ‘jackson pollock was there and was drunk again style’

pro poland

written by Matylda in design

At home. Today I got my first issue of ‘polenplus’. It’s a magazine on poland. And on life, art and the economy in particular.
You open it, you start to read and you don’t want to stop. It pokes out of the bulk of existing magazines. Every issue is arranged in one continous colour, on the outer edge you always find an explanation to the themes or people who are mentioned in the articles (like a wikpedia abridgement), you find an ‘easy-to-read’ font size (my mum will be thankful for that) and most important: you don’t feel penetrated by advertising.’polenplus’ is authentic and well-defined.

If I wouldn’t be polish - now I would like to be polish.

desired cultural infrastructure

written by Matylda in design

Maastricht. Netherlands. Today I went to the ‘New Year’s Reception’ in the NAI, dutch architecture institution. For drinks and cultural input. A film, made by the research group ‘ traces of autism’ from the design department of the Jan van Eyck Academy, was presented. It deals with the area around the large Sphinx building in maastricht and the urban development which is starting to be developed around there.
I watched it together with a bunch of very important people and during the presentation I was looking around. My conclusion: nobody really got the aim of the film. me also. I felt like they want to brainwash me. but thank god, this were the first research results. so, we are waiting for the following lectures and the solution. To be continued wednesday, 30th january / 2 pm.

break-out

written by Matylda in lalala

Before I came to maastricht to study product design I was busy with 2 dimensional design. My teachers use to say that sometimes I am captured in this world.
So here some help for the prisoners: 2 books which show how graphic design is moving into 3 dimensional objects and products.
