sony world photo award: the german mustard massacre

written by Matylda in design

another media conglomerate is launching an award. sony presents a photo award for professionals and amateurs which will be presented from the 21st - 25th april in cannes, france. the good part is that they also have an university shoot out. in this competition you will see two students from each of the 10 participating countries from europe. the assignment was to sum up your country in one image. here is one picture which was choosen to be presented in cannes.

germany - ’sum up your country in one image’ - black - red - yellow!!

sebastian müller and jan-philip welchering are students at the university of applied science and arts in dortmund, germany. sebastian is studying photography and jan-philip graphic design. the funny story is that jan-philip actually wanted to sign on photography but he made a mistake in the application form and end up in the graphic design department. not sure if it’s destiny, maybe, but it was just a stupid slip. what doesn’t bar him from taking good pictures.

self-help: ‘A’ stamp amusement

written by Matylda in lalala

imagine yourself sitting 3,5 hours at a techno party cash desk. in the first 2 hours nobody is coming because people use to join late nightlife. you feel bored and unchallenged. there is just an ‘A’ stamp and a pen. the latter isn’t interesting to you. (a pen is an everday object) so why not draw with the stamp. I did it.

preview: milan design week 2008 - myto chair

written by Matylda in design

last year I attended at the k2007, world’s largest plastics trade fair, where basf presented the new kontstantin grcic chair. we just have seen some miniatures and the process of designing the chair. on this year’s designweek (salone internazionale del mobile 16.-21.4.2008) in milan konstantin grcic will launch myto at the triennale design museum.

my minitaure of the myto (sadly, I got it in orange)

and as we know chairs let a designer heart beat. they are the icons of design. ludwig mies van der rohe, one of the most outstanding architects, designed one of the first cantilevered chairs in 1927. once he said that it is easier to build a house than to design a good chair.

oliver voss: slow but triumphant

written by Matylda in designers & me

how would you react if you recieve an email of one of the established advertisers in germany? that actually happend to me. I’ve been cool. we’ve got together in cologne. right now he is enyoing his holidays at his parents who live close-by cologne - what makes him likeable. (how many people do you know love to spend their leisure time with the ones who gave birth to them)

oliver voss is board (one of several) at jung von matt . they work on international clients like mini cooper, ebay and tui. they created the current campagine ‘du bist deutschland‘. (try to convince the germans to become more children. so melancholic that you could cry) the founders of the agency have been once described by news magazine der spiegel as the “pop stars of german advertising”.

oliver started his career as a law school student, but he quit his studies to become copywriter. he worked in new york and in amsterdam for different agencies and attested that he is the creative character who the inscrutable and maniac world of advertising needs. he is one of the archetypes who reached their goals without a study. and after this long way he and his collegue niklas frings-rupp found the miami ad school hamburg in 2003. an advertising school where you learn everything you need within 2 years, professional tutors included. oliver is an average creative. he likes to talk, to explore, to watch people and is curious. he even used a beer mat to note an idea he had. and he even thinks that he is slow, what you would never assume after you had an insight in his work.

jan van eyck academy: research + art = exhibition

written by Matylda in design

today some fine art students and me participate in a workshop from the jan van eyck academy, post-academic institute for research and production fine art, design, theory.

we were invited by reserachers from different disciplines. theo cowley, donatella bernadi, jean-baptiste maitre and société réaliste were our tutors for one day. we had to bring some of our work and install a group exhibition in one big room. the challange was to put the work in a different context, outside of our academy, in a white cube. would it have the same impact like in the own studio? can I present my work everwhere? how can I present it to make the intention clear. after evaluating all this questions (and more) we observed that working with people from diffrent disciplines broaden one’s mind. learn from and with others.

christoph seyferth: from the block

written by Matylda in designers & me

the seyferth bulding was one of the first things I liked about maastricht. I would describe it as a block-shaped wooden box that looks like a fort. since 2,5 years I was wondering who could have build this piece of uncommon architecture and who would live there. now I found out. I visited christoph seyferth at his house. and after I had some cake from his mum, we played four in a row. the ice was broken. we talked about him being an instructor at the tu eindhoven, about various ambassadors of design, abou malls and in general about possibilities of life.

maurice mentjes: designer or showmaster

written by Matylda in designers & me

of course, maurice mentjes is a designer. but when I visited him in his office I encouter a person who is full of energy. I was surprised about myself that I became so quite and chary. that’s when you meet somebody who shape up as someone who is as hyperactive as you. he even talked more than me. that doesn’t happen very often.

actually maurice studied product and jewellery design. he made one year at the design academy but wasn’t happy about the studies and quit them. then he went back to maastricht and studied visual arts. the final step was a summersession at the domus academy in milan. he made some products and furniture. but after all he figured out that his real passion is interior. he was nominated for a lot of his works and got the dutch design prize for interiordesign for the stash bag shop, the witloof restaurant and dsm headquarters.

karsten födinger: about the artist

written by Matylda in design

it’s almost 4 am. I am tired but thrilled. we just have 15h left to the opening of our exhibition and I still need some sleep.

I will represent the artist and his work now:

karsten foedinger

it´s the act which characterises the appearance of karsten födinger´s work. the traces and energies of simple actions are embedded in the artifact. working with simple building material, it is not his intention to create a beautiful artwork, or to confront the viewer with conceptual truths. but there is an elegancy in the elementariness of his works, that maybe wasn´t intended by the artist, but by the act, the material and the moment.

luxe paarden in actie: exhibition in personal space

written by Matylda in design

I am excited. I will have the first exhibition in my apartment. my flatmate, miriam hartwig and me - ‘luxe paarden in actie’ , invited an artist to work at our domicile. karsten födinger is from karlsruhe, germany where he is studying fine arts. he is living, eating and working with us. we present his first single exhibition on thursday at 7 pm. so more to come… watch out!

dan perjovschi: master of the punchline

written by Matylda in design

dan perjovschi is another example for my obsession of black and white drawings. I saw his work in the van abbemuseum last week. and I fall in love again. he is the one who is allowed to make mistakes in the spelling (I hope people let me do mine too) and who is presenting skeptical commentary on global incidents.

when you are a kid they don’t let you to mess with the wall. it’s wrong. but everbody wants dan to draw on the wall. he says that he doesn’t have strikt plans when he starts. it’s risksy and exciting. and often he feels under pressure. his results are at once hilarious and subversive.
