michelle schields: high table from a tale

written by Matylda in design

london

michelle schields has created a table that stands on long birches called ‘fujimori table’ for the ‘mint tells tales’ exhibition at the mint gallery. In my opinion, one of the most convincing pieces in the exhibition which makes me drift away in my own thoughts about tales.

‘there is once an old table’

there was once an old table who had tired old legs
a long tiring life nearly left him shreds

with years yet to come it planted some trees
It hoped that these birches would answer its needs

It wanted to ascend to the heavens above
at least to relieve its sore limbs thereof

the years went by and it measured the trees
with boxwood rules and patience indeed

just as it hoped the birches grew taller
as each year passed its worries grew smaller

klauser & carpenter = moody + open

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

london

andré klauser is german and ed carpenter is english. they studied product design together at the royal college of art. in 2005 they set up their own studio called klauser & carpenter when they realised they have a lot in common.

the main reason why I contacted andré is that I am maybe the biggest fan of their louvre light, a nifty suspension light which they designed for london-based furniture manufacturer established & sons.

based in shoreditch, london, in an old industrial building that has been selling picture frames since years, the duo has their studio. surrounded by 2 helping interns and a lot coffee to go cups, the relaxed designers are working on their designs.

lisa stockham: devoured

written by Matylda in design

london

lisa stockham’s ‘pull it together’ collection is exhibited at the ‘mint tells tales’ show at the mint gallery right at the moment.

the scupltures evoke the feeling that they are in a movement or that they can develop their own internal dynamics. the royal college graduate says: ‘decoration multiplies out of control like bacteria or fungus spreading over a surface.’

nicola morgan: no sew, no glue

written by Matylda in design

london

my favourite at the new designers show is definitely nicola morgan’s alterpretations collection.

the garments are laser cut and link together without the need for machine sewing.

new designers: sense of taste

written by Matylda in design

london

I visited the new designers show at the buisness design centre, a show that brings together the best in uk graduate design.

I really like this work. a young university of plymouth student (I didn’t write his name down, please let me know who made this if you know) applied cigarettes into the production of the plate. once fired they leave a void.

the designer wrote: ‘why do I always want a cigarette after every meal?… the irony is that my most intense tobacco cravings follow a good meal.

sebastian wrong: alice meets the light

written by Matylda in design

london

english designer sebastian wrong created a light installation with his new lamp called buggs. ‘a buggs life’ is presented at the established & sons limited showroom.

the smiling face reminds me of the excessive and humorous characters in the ‘alice in wonderland’ cartoon.

danecia sibingo: left over from the aliens

written by Matylda in design

london

danecia sibingo, a 3rd year architecture student designed this year’s architectural association summer pavilion.

the triangular pavilion is built from sustainable spruce plywood and is called driftwood. It is constructed from slices of plywood assembled vertically on a wooden frame, creating an undulating surface. danecia’s work is based on the bedford square and looks like something that was forgotten by an unknown species. I think, It should stay there forever.

metropolitan works: a place for realisation

written by Matylda in design

london

after graduation you suddenly lose all your work possibilities. but there are some institutions that might help you out. couple months ago I visited the metropolitan works. It calls himself ‘london’s leading creative Industries centre’. the aim is to help designers and manufacturers develop ideas and bring new products to reality.

a con is, that london-based designers get a discount while other designers have to pay the full price… at least there is a new space and a manufacturing resource for designers working in the city. so, move to london or pay the full price.

stair chair: a chair for the stair

written by Matylda in design

maastricht

graduation is over. now I need some time to ‘recover’. I found a nice photo of one of my prototypes of my modus operandi collection. one of my fellow students used it to sit on it during lunch. we called it ’stair chair’. any buyers? this graduation made me poor. : )

modus operandi: my graduation project

written by Matylda in lalala

I graduated yesterday. yeah. here is my project:

modus operandi

‘Led by an obsession for clean-cut form, the product design graduate has created a number of archetypal forms that relate with the common conception of a chair.

Matylda distorts and extracts the functionality through her ‘modus operandi’, exerting and gaining dominance over the chairs, transforming them into her conceptual pieces.

She proceeds like a remorseful ‘serial killer’, demonstrating a hedonistic and sometimes crazed approach, before reassessing her ‘victim’, realising her conduct and ceasing.’
