fidel peugeot: not a happy car, a happy designer

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

berlin

fidel peugeot is a designer, he possibly drives his surname and loves the colour red. he and his collegue carl emilio pircher have founded the walking chair studio which is based in vienna.

I had an encounter with fidel during the dmy, the international design festival in berlin. he was standing next to one of his ‘you may’ seatings. he describes them as a new furniture for the public space, for indoors and outdoors. the seatings are developed in coorporation with lynfabrikken for aarhus.

hence they were not only the winners of the dmy award 2009. they also created a great place to socialise at the event. was this the secret to their success?

studio niels en sven: design countrymen

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

milan

niels kerkkamp and sven lamme are studio niels en sven. they are based in hilversum, the town that is often called ‘media city’ since it is the principal centre for radio and television broadcasting in the netherlands. the guys both graduated at the school of arts in utrecht in 3d-design.

I met the two designers at the design week in milan earlier this year. they were exhibiting their newest work within tuttobene, a dutch platform for design.

I like their studio slogan, it’s : excessive urban design in farmer style. check out their website and see yourself..

tina roeder: ranges between things

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

berlin

I met german designer tina roeder in june during the dmy, design festival. tina did her ba at central saint martins in london and her ma at the design academy eindhoven. she also worked for highly acclaimed studio job. now she is based in berlin. tina was presenting her naked couch at the appel design gallery. she was not just showing her pieces, she was also curating the show with the title ‘conceptual substance’. germany needs more conceptual design. I am with you, tina!

I really like what is written about her on her website:

‘RE-OCCURING TOPICS ARE PERCEPTION AND ANAESTHESIA, REALITY AND SIMULATION, STRUCTURE AND FACADE, NORM AND DEVIATIONS: COUPLED WITH A FASCINATION FOR COMPLEXITY AND LIGHTNESS.’

DIY: rotational moulding machine

written by Matylda in design

london

I visited the new designers show last month. design students andrew duffy, craig tyler and edward harrison from the university of rochester presented a minature rotational moulding machine.

the DIY (do It yourself) rotation moulding machine is built to replicate the industrial process to help further understand its possibilities. it was built at no cost from scrap materials and simply powered by a cordless drill. one of them told me that they just invested 5 pounds for the machine. what a bargain.

carl clerkin: special, not just today

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

london

I meet carl clerkin at the new designers show press preview. rose etherington from dezeen introduced us.

when I saw him the first time I had the feeling that I know him from somewhere but I wasn’t sure. I was even thinking that I might be wrong and that I am just fascinated by his ‘today’s special’ tshirt and his matching pink socks in the adidas flip-flops. I mean, this designer is surely the right one to meet in the pub and thrash out ideas over a few pints. and he is the only one who like his adidas flip-flops even more than I do mine.
