tomek rygalik: polenglish

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

london

it’s polska year.
that’s why poland was also big during london design festival.

I met polish designer tomek rygalik at the young creative poland show in south kensington. the show was curated by miska miller-lovegrove, polish born architect and ross lovegrove’s wife, who aims to bring polish culture to a wide uk audience.

tomek works in 2 countries. he established his own design practice in london, uk and lodz, pl. in addition he teaches at the academy of fine arts in warsaw. at the young creative poland show, he was presenting a new lamp called genotype, his most recent work for corian by dupont. the designer is surely a good example of an internationally established designer that blends his polish nature with some english style

jaime Hayon and nienke klunder: big banger

written by Matylda in design

london design festival

‘comic-like frivolity’ (with lots of boobs) is how I would describe ‘american chateau’, a showcase of work by nienke klunder and jaime hayon which opened at spring projects - spring house earlier this month. it’s all about the sausages.

simon heijdens: it is in his nature

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

london

simon nurtures trees on builings.
simon makes chairs from a solid rock.
simon evolves carpets on the pavement.
simon developes stuff.

I met london-based designer simon heijdens in his little studio in east london. the dutch designer studied film at udk berlin, and product design at design academy eindhoven. the continuous state of growth and transformation of our surroundings offers him the adequate influences for his work. what’s next simon? a building that grows in his own?

michiel van der kley: is it a ball or is it a spaceship?

written by Matylda in design

maastricht

last week I visited maastricht based entrepreneurs paul rinkens and suze thomma in their office. damn, they could request money for the admission. I came across a nice collection of furniture and products. the globus, a compacted office space by michiel van der kley for artifort was my favourite.

mathias hahn: captain nice and clear

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

london

yeah, call me a collector: here is another member of the creative collective called okay studio. his name is mathias hahn. he is german and, like the other okay studio members, a royal college of art graduate in design products.

but here comes the cool part.. mathias comes from the same area in germany where I was raised. It doesn’t happen that often that I can talk about stuff from the past. so, he did his bachelor in industrial design at the folkwang university in essen, germany. afterwards he felt the need to do a master. london seemed to be the right choice for the readheaded designer. and that’s where ‘the devil in the detail’ might stay forever.
