written by Matylda in drawn interviews

eindhoven

experimenting with materials, finding out new techniques and loving porcelain. that is djim berger.

djim just graduated at the design academy, where he had his ‘textile made fragile’ shelves on show. furthermore the designhuis, eindhoven-based design museum, is exhibiting his ‘lightweight porelain’ stool and the shelves in the ‘talent 2009′ exhibition, a show of graduates of 30 european design institutes and universities.

djim is also one of the founders of the atelierdorp, a 20th century church in eindhoven that a group of designers took over as a workspace. atelierdorp is where his porcelain pieces evolve.

bas van raay: conceptualist

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

eindhoven

conceptualism denies any universal objects. bas van raay likes creating these conceptual objects. the eindhoven-based designer launched his new work, 3 Industrially sculptured objects, which evoke questions: just because it isn’t what it seems to be.

‘I am furniture’ was last week on show during the dutch design week. bas was exhibiting with his colleagues from the atelierdorp, a collective of designers, at the strijp x.

his aim is to affect other people. ‘when they see my objects, spaces or concepts they will think twice about what they just experienced’.

maarten baptist: everyday scenery

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

eindhoven

It was the opening of skitsch, a new Italian design brand that was launched during milan design week. somebody introduced me to maarten baptist. I knew his name and I remember him in context with watdesign, a design studio which he founded with a colleague after graduating at the design academy. but In 2008 maarten founded joine, an office for design. watdesign was disbanded. obviously it wasn’t easy to work together when one of the founders was based in new york.

now, just one year later, maarten was exhibiting his range of products in his own studio during dutch design week, which finished yesterday.

lisa klappe, an antwerp-based photographer did the press images of all products. they used the office as a photo studio and left the setting for the visitors of the design week. The setting consisted of joine products on 4 different colour backgrounds in every site of the square room.

jo meesters: commitment to the creation

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

eindhoven

I have seen jo meesters work on several design-related websites. his pulp collection draw attention to me but I have never seen his pieces in real life.

during the dutch design week (till October 25th) he opened his workspace for the public. my chance to have a closer look on his work. the studio is located in an old school in the center of eindhoven. the space has high ceilings and is blessed with big windows which leave a lot light in. jo presents his work in a sensible way by creating a peaceful surrounding. why should I add words now If you can have a look at the pictures below.

formafantasma: italian statement

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

eindhoven

formafantasma, sounds like a promising name. the 2 italian designers who just graduated at the design academy, IM masters, are the brainchilds of it.

sicily-born andrea trimarchi and simone farresin are now exhibiting at the graduation galleries of the design academy, as a part of the dutch design week.

‘moulding tradition’ is the latest project of the 2 designers. the idea is to demonstrate how any folk tradition can be reinvented amd how new objects can become part of a new tradition. both designers work together since 2006 and have a number of projects that deserve serious attention. well done, guys.

yoeri treffers: the white myself

written by Matylda in design

eindhoven

just got back from the dutch design week. on saturday I joined the press tour and went to the graduation galleries of the design academy. here is something from the man and well-being department:

yoeri treffers’ inflatable void, a blow-up space made of tyvek, comes in first. the ‘void’ is inflated within 20 seconds by a fan hanging from the ceiling. the fabric adapts to the surrounded objects and can be used in various rooms. basically it allows you to create your own private space, in any space.

henny van nistelrooy: changing adaption

written by Matylda in drawn interviews

london design festival

henny van nistelrooy is dutch. the dutch guy choose to stay in london after graduating in design products at the royal college of art. all this just happend 2 years ago. now he and his colleague oscar diaz founded parallel projects, where they bring themselves into the position of curating design events.

that’s where I met henny in person, at one of their exhibitions in the brompton design district, south london. ‘three yet one’ (see previous entry) was one of the two shows they were responsible for during the london design festival. I didn’t had much time to talk to henny (it’s busy during design festival), but he was an excellent guide through the show and a perfect model for the portrait. I am sure that now, after becoming facebook friends, we gonna keep in touch and maybe do a bike tour. like authentic dutch people do.

three yet one: what you see is what you get

written by Matylda in design

london design festival

‘three yet one’ is an exhibition by london-based parallel projects. the idea was to show how the media affects our understanding of design. a writer and a photographer were invited to demonstrate the work from their personal point of view. the text and the image were displayed during the london design festival as an addition to the product.

this is a clever idea which dezeen shows in detail. I just present my usual suspects without showing the picture + text of the invited writer and a photographer.
